COCHIN WATER TRANSPORT NETWORK

Cochin has a good network of inland waterway system consisting of backwaters, canals, lagoons and estuaries. National Waterway No.3 connecting Kollam and Kottappuram pass through this region. Currently the State Water Transport Department (SWTD), Kerala Shipping and Inland Navigation Corporation (KSINC) and private operators are providing passenger and cargo boat services to the adjoining islands and industrial centres.

Inkel has made feasibility study of developing a Water Transport Network in Cochin.

The proposed Water Transport Network envisages a comprehensive transport system or an alternate transport system which suits best to the geographical and topilogical speciality of the region. Developing a water transport network connecting various points of Cochin city and its suburbs will reduce the vehicular traffic through roads and other terrestrial mode. The usage of water network for cargo movement will also result in substantial reduction of cargo movement costs and will help reducing the cogestion on the roads. Various tourists spots can also be linked through the canals and this would make the movement of the tourists much easier.
